Washington, D.C., between January 1891 and January 1894. "Beall, Nellie." And her little dog, too. 5x7 inch glass negative from the C.M. Bell portrait studio. View full size.
I am of an age such that when I see an attractive woman walking down the street, I am more interested in her canine companion.
what kind of drug store is this??
[A pretty good one, evidently. - Dave]
Just noticed the furry thing around her throat, with such a cute little head. My dad told me he used to be afraid of his mother’s critters when he was a boy, and whenever he came upon them when my grandmother wasn’t wearing them (lying on the made bed, for instance), they gave him a fright each and every time.
This young lady has great spirit. I salute thee, Nellie, over the borders of three centuries!
I'm guessing by Nellie's clothes, the fact that she's getting her picture made and the dog's clipped claws, that they were both living their best life in 1891-1894. Wish we knew what the dog's name was.
I had *just* thought "and your little dog, too" when I read those exact words in the caption! I wonder if the scriptwriter for "The Wizard of Oz" had any idea that the infamous line would be quoted so much over the years?
She looks as if she can barely sit up under the weight of all that clothing.
I'm loving the folksy backdrop, as well as the slightly goofy facial expressions of both canine and owner. My precious pup, Rizzo, and I emit a similarly besotted vibe when we are together. And from the feathers to the leather, Nellie's accessories game was righteous.
