Richmond, Virginia, circa 1907. "Grace Street and Capitol Square east from 8th." 8x10 inch dry plate glass negative, Detroit Publishing Company. View full size.
At first glance, the modern view is a dead-ringer for the past, but look closer: the building stretched up over the past 104 years.
The modern roofline mimics the old, however with an additional two floors between the decorative cornice and ground. Give the architect a gold star for pulling this off, though I mourn the modern-era's lost flagpole and lack of reassuring “FIRE PROOF” signage.
A fellow can never be too sure about safety!
Below is the same view from April of 2011.
