... major routes had been designated U.S. Highways since 1926, even though they were funded entirely on a state or local basis. Even-numbering indicated east-west routes, while odd-numbering indicated north-south. Two digits indicated main highways; three indicated spur routes.
Interestingly, the advent of Interstate highways, beginning in 1956, did not completely supplant the U.S. system, to which new routes are occasionally still added.
