New York, 1939. "Radio City buildings (RCA Building and other Rockefeller Center buildings)." Click here for an alternate view. Gelatin silver print by Irving Underhill. View full size.
When I was young boy my mom would bring us to the city. Always loved going to the Librairie de France in Rockefeller Center. It was located in the low rise building left of center in the 1939 photo aka La Maison Francaise. It was a great little French bookstore. Rising rents forces it to close in 2009.

My father started his career with Shell Oil behind one of those windows about halfway up. We were transferred to Houston in the 70s and he said the only thing he missed about going to work in NYC was that view.
The link provided by Dave in the caption to the alternate nighttime view by Samuel Gottscho inspires me to suggest the daytime version taken a couple of months earlier from a different angle – RCA: 1933 – as well as another glorious, aethereal view of midtown by the same genius, also in daylight: Gotham: 1931.
