Washington, D.C., circa 1911. "Mawhinney, M., Miss." Mary Mawhinney at the harp. Harris & Ewing Collection glass negative. View full size.
Marie Mawhinney grew up with her family in Washington, DC. Her father was a lawyer. She attended college and at age 29 married Leo Kavanagh, who died in 1951 at age 55. Marie herself lived to be 101. She seems to have been an amateur harpist, with a few references to performance in newspapers around the time of this photo.
... is the very definition of "diaphanous," is it not?
What a lovely young woman, showing great confidence and self-assurance. Alas, Google didn't help me learn anything more about her, but I find myself wishing I had known her.
