November 1938. "Hotel Fontenelle, social center of Omaha, Nebraska." Medium format acetate negative by John Vachon for the Farm Security Administration. View full size.
I wonder if the Hotel Fontenelle was too pricey for John Vachon's budget? We might not get a view from a window in this hotel looking out over the city. The seven storey vertical neon sign would have been quite a sight at night. Neon tube maintenance would not be a job for someone with vertigo. The ladder on the right side of the sign provided access to the full height of the sign.
I've always had a soft spot for that place.
It is now a parking lot next to the Hruska Federal Courthouse.
