1862. On the James River in Virginia. "Effect of Confederate shot on Federal ironclad Galena." Wet plate glass negative by James F. Gibson. View full size.
This is a ship of war and not a cruise ship like today. Common in these days throw unwanted item over the side including "doing your duty"! "Sitting" on the rail was normal but this war ship had a different shape to it as it has an armor belt along the sides, changing the the profile of the tumblehome, making it wide. The stains are from #1 and the box is for the other. I'm sure other stuff was disposed in this same manner. Also with a normal shape to the sides or tumblehome, the stains would not happen. Remember, this was wartime and no time for convenience.
Does anyone know where I can find a muster for the crew?
Wow, that one shot caught her just at the waterline. I note the funnel or chute about midship that discharges overboard. Was that for general garbage or human waste? Looks a bit streaky below where it empties!
