December 12, 1915. "Mrs. Raymond Belmont." In a court case that dragged on for years, Mrs. Belmont, the former chorus girl Ethel Loraine, sued her husband, of the banking and equestrian dynasty, for desertion when he abandoned her eight days after their wedding. The photo on this site called BEAUTY is the little Belmont child, heiress, registered nurse, then committed suicide...guess this was her mum.
[This is not Alice's mom. Read the captions. What's Ethel's husband's name? What's Alice's father's name? - Dave]
And I think that fox is trying to chew its leg off to get away...
I dunno, have you seen some of the mugs that pass for "high fashion" models these days? Some o them chicks look like they had a cheese grater to the face but if the body proportions are correct, it's fortune and glory. Or at least Versace and heroin.
I'll admit I feel a bit guilty about starting this thread devoted to Mrs. Belmont's, . . . um . . . visage, since we all seem to be piling on. Yes, I have taken unflattering photos, and as a matter of fact I'm no prize under the best of circumstances. But my contrition is mitigated every time I take another look at the photo. I can only conclude that your definition of "homely" is a great deal different than mine. As my mother would say, this lady is "homely as a mud fence." But I'm sure she had a great personality.
I'm sure none of you have ever had an unflattering photograph taken. I'll admit the fox is repulsive, but this gal is not homely, and might have had a lot of grace. Sheesh!
I was going to say something about changing standards of beauty and the like, and in truth she probably looks better without the hat and the fur stole, but then again there's not much that could improve that nose beyond surgery. I'm reminded of the country song "The Girls All Get Prettier At Closing Time," and am forced to suggest that Mr. Belmont was probably on a seven day bender.
At first I thought it was Tony Curtis, but he was prettier.
My mother's given name was Ethel Loraine, but everyone knew her as Jackie. I can't imagine that this was her namesake. She was far more a fox than a hound.
Eight days? What took him so long?
So, a fox face and a horse face. Even dead, the fox wins.
