1924. "Ford Motor Co. (L.P. Steuart & Bro.)." Our third entry in National Photo's Fords-in-Washington series -- a coal delivery truck at the L.P. Steuart depot, 138 12th Street NE. View full size. National Photo Company glass negative.
This very property has been the subject of a zoning battle in the past two years over whether it can be used for a charter school. Before that it appears possibly to have been used by the Knights of St. Johns. The rest of the neighborhood is largely rowhouses; I can't imagine they were happy to have all that coal around.
This looks like a miniature re-creation for a diorama, only the man in the truck pulls it back to reality. Of course this place is probably unrecognizable in modern DC, even with all that brickwork.
