Washington, D.C., circa 1920. "Shrine Temple, Third and E streets N.W." National Photo Company Collection glass negative, Library of Congress. View full size.
Washington Post, Feb 10, 1884
The Supreme Council, thirty-third degree, for the Southern jurisdiction of the United States, has recently purchased the Wright Rives property, No. 433 Third street northwest, which has been handsomely fitted up as their headquarters. Here the Grand Commander, Gen. Albert Pike, and William M. Ireland, Secretary General, have their offices. A large addition has been completed to the original building, in which has been placed the extensive and valuable library belongings of the Rite, and which is open to the members of the fraternity at all hours.
This certainly is not the Shrine Temple, for the Scottish Rite eagle is clearly over the door above the numbers "433". I don't know where the Shrine Temple was in 1920, but today it is at 1315 K St NW.
["Shrine temple" was a generic appellation for any Masonic lodge. This building, the Scottish Rite's House of the Temple, was at 433 Third Street. Around 1927 it was sold and the Scottish Rite moved to a new temple at 13th and K. - Dave]
