Washington, D.C., 1925. "Jerry Mangan and Ione Whalen, Wardman Park Pool." National Photo Company Collection glass negative. View full size.
Nearly six years later and, apparently, it hasn't occurred to anyone that an official at a swimming competition would carry a starter's pistol.
[Actually it did. No need to belabor the obvious. - Dave]

You folks never heard of pool sharks? The term didn't originate in billiard halls, you know. The dreaded freshwater pool shark species is now extinct, thanks to deadeye pistol-packers like swim instructor Jerry Mangan.
Ione is a real cutie. At first glance, I thought she was receiving the Titanafram award.
Swim Meet is Set for Today
Will be Staged at Wardman Pool This Afternoon
Swimmers from the Washington Canoe Club and the Capital Athletic Club will vie with a host of competitors in two events for south Atlantic titles this afternoon in the final water meet to be staged this summer, at Wardman Park.
...
Ione Whalen, with 18 points, is leading the remainder of swimmers who have been competing for the Wardman Park cup, and with tomorrow's swim concluding this year's events, the fair Capital Athletic club swimmer is favored to annex the trophy.
...
Although the entry list is already large enough to assure the success of the meet, Jerry Mangan, who is in charge of the swims, has extended the time for entrance until today at 12 o'clock and all swimmers who enter by this time may compete.
Was evidently very strict with respect to the "No Running" and "No Horseplay" policies.
So failures were shot on the spot? Now Dave's going to tell us the gat was for starting something.
