October 14, 1925. "Sec. Dwight Davis & family after swearing in." Dwight Davis, Secretary of War in the Coolidge administration and a tennis champion in his younger years, is probably best remembered as founder of the Davis Cup. National Photo Company glass negative, Library of Congress. View full size.
Who needs an Army? Looks like his wife is ready to do plenty of damage on her own.
Cynthia Davis, the younger daughter on the left, died in 2005 at the age of 94. Her husband of 56 years was William Martin, a Federal Reserve chairman who died in 1998.
The body language is interesting. The girls have closed but mostly clenched fists. And he is pretty much isolated in the picture.
He certainly has the tennis physique, all arms and legs!
I had to laugh when I first saw this very proper photo of the Davis family because I was instantly reminded of the little, straight-legged people I would create out of clothespins (not the kind with the spring kind) when I was a kid.
