I recall when reading "Team of Rivals" that quite a few of the Washington set went off to watch one of the Bull Run battles. Nowadays we have YouTube.
If I'm seeing the wagon park in the middle distance, it's a safe bet that these folks are safely outside the range of small arms and probably any artillery rounds of the era.
To think that you'd sit on the side of a hill and watch the action. This photo is even more haunting with the ghost effects. I wonder how many of the spectators ended up dying in the Civil War?
