September 1947. Warrenton, Virginia. "Midnight picnic being given by Eve Prince." Photo by Martha Holmes. Exciting news: Google and Time Inc. are putting the entire Life magazine photo archive of some 10 million images online. If I post one every day, we'll be done in about 27,000 years. View full size.
I've begun working on a time machine in the basement. I must return to 1947 to help this goddess toast her marshmallow.
This shot and more especially the girl remind me of the Coca-Cola advertisements of the 1940's and their wholesome all-American beauties, albeit in illustrated rather than photographic form.
What lovely, innocent times. No one is doing drugs, only marshmallows.
I was three months old when that picture was taken. What a different society we were.
The kid on the left makes marshmallows just how I like them!
The picture above this, of the old hero of Gettysburg, reminded me of a Life magazine spread from July or August of 1963 full of pics of the 100th anniversary celebration of the battle and here at this post I find that they'll be online. Thanks for the news.
What a beautiful and timeless glimpse of life. (No pun intended.)
They'll be 27,000 great ones, with Shorpy!
