New York, July 1948. "Young boy tossing a ball on a city street." Photograph by Cornell Capa, Life image archive. View full size.
He was quite the photographer, in his own right. What first grabbed me about this photo was that it is among the few photos not captured in a portraiture style, on Shorpy.
Old Cooter, I'll have to slightly disagree with you. Take it from a long time pitcher, that is just the natural way the hand and wrist turn on an overhand throw. Just to confirm that, I just now pretended to throw a few, and that's exactly where my hand ended up. A screwball motion is quite similar, yes, but only with a more exaggerated wrist turn and more force. Most kids that age wouldn't have the strength to make the ball move much, even if they could get the ball to turn in the reverse direction of a regular curve ball. The kid looks like he knows how to throw pretty well. I had a great curve, but even in high school couldn't get a screw ball to move enough. Best one I ever saw was Tug McGraw's.
He's not throwing like a girl. He's turning his wrist over in the manner of King Carl Hubbell. He's throwing the screwball.
He's a manly boy.
I was going to say that he throws like a girl, but that would probably cause a big kerfuffle. So I won't.
This is a good one isn't it. It just evokes something great.
today this kid would be around 70 years old, right? And he's a Shorpy fan. Opens his mail and sees hisself. How cool would that be, eh? Find one of me, Dave!! I'll give you a hint: Northern Minnesota.
Boy! This is a classic image. Every boy's dream, to play baseball as much as possible.
Gotta get me a pair of those PF Flyers.
