She may need some penitence for her inattention to fashion, but I am guessing that she has her own ideas of style and prefers notice on her own terms! The other personages have flair and you can imagine that they glide gracefully for all their rotundity, God bless them.

Couldn't her maid have taken her aside, in an act of charity, and set her straight? Were polka-dots ever this popular? And are those melted marshmallows on her hat? Might she have been an opium abuser?

Mrs. Colman was president of the National League of American Pen Women, an arts association that exists to this day. Eleanor Roosevelt was also a member. I'm guessing this was taken at their national convention.
This is the Connecticut Avenue entrance of the Mayflower Hotel. These ladies would be facing southwest, more or less toward the White House, three blocks away. I'm betting the one on the left is the free spirit of the group.
