With the lack of padding and protection some of these guys must have been solid calluses.
The score for this game was Quantico Marines 14, Georgetown 3.
Georgetown won every game but this one, in 1923. They were pretty tough, but not tough enough for the Marines of Quantico, Virginia (where I was born, 31 years later)!
This photo reminds me when my son was young and asked, "How come the old days didn't have any color?" Therefore the question, "How did these players figure out who was on what side?" The uniforms look a little too uniform. Perhaps color was the distinguishing factor.
Not much gear on these guys. Noble days.
This has to be one of the best photos on the site. The grit and determination of the runner and the blood on the tackler's face show how this game was played by the true tough guys of he day. Great shot.
Great action shot! Look at the determination and blood on their faces.
