February 19, 1927. "Katharine Meyer." Daughter of Eugene Meyer and, as the widow of Philip Graham, future publisher of the Washington Post. Also probably the only subject of a Shorpy post that I've ever seen in person. View full size.
When Post-Newsweek bought the Orlando CBS affiliate awhile back, they changed the call letters from WCPX to WKMG.
In 2003 I received a phone call from a woman at the Washington Post who had gotten my name from an A/V installer who had referred her to me. It seemed Katharine Graham had an apartment at 870 UN Plaza that the newspaper owned (the building also housed Johnny Carson and Truman Capote, among others, at one time or another) . The 2nd Gulf War was about to start and the Editors felt it would be a good place to put up their reporters, as it was right across the street from the United Nations. They wanted someone to go to the apartment and survey the TV sets, cable boxes and VCRs, if any. It seems she rarely used it and they had no idea what was in there. I said I would look at it myself because I lived a few blocks away. I had to fax a copy of my Driver's License to her and she set up an appointment with the building managers. My wife and I went there that evening and after the concierge checked our IDs, we were escorted to the 3 bedroom apartment that I think was on the 17th Floor. He opened the door and we walked into a 1960s time warp. The kitchen had the original builder's Roper appliances. The wall oven and dishwasher appeared to be unused. The Refrigerator was running and empty. One bedroom was used as a den and had cable box and an ancient JVC 19" TV. The master bedroom had an old 20" Sony TV and no VCR. The 3rd bedroom had no TV or VCR. The apartment faced south with magnificent views of the UN and the East River. it also had river views to the east and great city vistas to the north. It was quite an experience. I called the lady at the Post the next day, told what I saw and recommended, she agreed and I made a pretty good sale and had an unforgettable evening as well.
She could have known who "Deep Throat" was had she only asked but she withdrew the question to Woodward immediately upon asking it.
Born June 16, 1917, died July 17, 2001, so she was 9 in the picture.
See Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katharine_Graham. Very interesting life.
