New York City circa 1908. "Cells, new Tenderloin police station." 8x10 glass negative, George Grantham Bain Collection. View full size.
Although West 20th Street might be considered at the fringe of the Tenderloin, the West 30th Street Station was at the center of the action (just around the corner was the infamous Haymarket "concert saloon " among many others). The building still stands at 132-138 West 30th Street and is still used by the NYPD. The plaque on the building says 1907 so perhaps two new stations were built that year. The arch at the center leads to an inner courtyard which may have originally been for horses but is now occupied by motorcycles. The building to the east (left)is by Cass Gilbert.
From the NYTimes, May 13, 1906, "Old Tenderloin Station Awaiting Its Doom": "Just across the street from the old smoke-begrimed Tenderloin Police Station, they are tearing down three or four other ancient houses to provide a site for the new Tenderloin Station... in the middle of the block between Sixth and Seventh Avenues, on the north side of Thirtieth Street, the station of the Nineteenth Precinct sits, its number being 137..."
And the building is there still as a precinct station, sandwiched in between all the other shabby industrial slabs here in shkeevey old midtown (I work one block away).
[As noted in the previous comment, there were two Tenderloin precincts after the 19th was split in 1907. The "new" one in 1908 would be on West 20th Street. The item below is from the May 18, 1907, N.Y. Times. - Dave]
In 1907 the Tenderloin (19th) Precinct was split in two; this was the headquarters of the new precinct, at 120 West 20th Street.
Better watch your step there Muldoon, I hear Lefty's fixing to blow this joint.
I wonder if this is where Bernie is residing now.
It's like a New England B&B in the fall!
Why should I expect to see Cagney or Ricco suddenly appear!
