Allan Pinkerton ("E.J. Allen") of the Secret Service on horseback. Antietam, Maryland, main eastern theater of the war, September-October 1862. Glass negative (wet collodion). View full size. Photograph by Alexander Gardner.
Not inverted. There is writing in both top corners (not reversed) and along the bottom (reversed). You will also see "7468" written on the grass in the foreground to the right. This is a glass plate negative, and can be marked on either side. Writing that looks black is done by scratching on the emulsion side (or with white paint). Writing that looks white was done with black ink.
An-teet-am (with emphasis on 'teet')
For years I as a European have asked myself how to pronounce Antietam. Can anybody tell me?
