Vanderbilt Cup Auto Race, Robertson in Locomobile on track. October 24, 1908. View full size. George Grantham Bain Collection.
The 1946 Automotive Golden Jubilee at Mineola, NY is documented in a film by Vanderbilt Cup historian Howard Kroplick. The bit about Locomobile #16 starts at 1:40.
Locombile #16 is started up one last time before being place on permanent display at the Henry Ford Museum.
The car is now at the Henry Ford Museum, Dearborn Michigan. They show at the Old Car Festival in September & has been run a couple years ago. It was formerly owned by the late Peter Helck, who was a famous artist. Used to be a photo of it on their website.
Locomobiles were built in Bridgeport, CT, and this is the winning car that year. The Vanderbilt Cup was the Indy 500 of its day and cars were shipped from Europe to compete.
The car still exists, looking much like it did in 1908 although the paint is dull and the numbers are worn away. I used to see it as a kid at car shows in Connecticut and it's been shown at all the major shows like Pebble Beach & Amelia Island.
One of the great things about these old race car photos is the way the car seems to lean forward, making it look like it's going faster. That was due to the photo technology of the day, but I can't remember the exact reason.
Yogi Bear!? How about Buster Keaton?
[Him too. And let's not forget Art Carney as Ed Norton. Whose character Yogi was based on. - Dave]
thanks for blowing it up, I thought he was a time traveler but he is just a different hat in the bunch
[That's what you call a porkpie hat. What Yogi Bear wears. - Dave]
