1923. Washington, D.C. "Unidentified women." There are two glass negatives of these lovely ladies; the caption labels are blank. National Photo. View full size.
That's what my grandmother would have called these hootchy-kootchy girls.
I would have never been allowed to associate with this trio -- they probably smoke and carry flasks of hootch.
I love this picture -- a timeless image of friendship.
Headbands are actually a kind of heavy duty upholstery fabric. I purchased a big boxful from a woman whose 103-year-old mother had just died. She had been a professional seamstress and left behind the most wonderful spools of ribbon & fabric. Some of it has glassine beads woven in and was made in Czechoslovakia. I've sold all of it, but kept a 3' length of burgundy-tone similar to the gunny-sack girl's. It matches the colors in my 1879 parlor perfectly. Lovely to stroke . . .
These three look, from a fellow woman's POV, like they would be an absolute blast to hang out with. Full of moxie and spunk, and smart as heck, but not too pretty to intimidate the "rest of us." BFFs from the flapper era!
The blouse of the woman on the left looks suspiciously like it is constructed of burlap. It's making me itch just to look at it.
Wow - Hey Dave, you'll have to add a category called "View Stand Back Image!"
Wayne D. took the words out of my typing fingers. But it would be left girl's fb photo (perfect stare!), and middle girl wouldn't be 100% thrilled about it bc she is making a slightly odd face. She would leave a comment on the photo stating such.
But I am intrigued by middle girl's dress. That X -- I want to see the rest of what's going on there. Love this pic.
They are, left to right: Patty, Laverne and Maxine.
Need I say more? Granted, there's no fingers in a V and poochy lips, but this is your Grandma's Facebook.
Little did they know 46 years later they probably would have fit right in at Woodstock. Especially with the headbands.
