June 1935. Somewhere in California. "Motherless migrant children. They work in the cotton." Medium-format nitrate negative by Dorothea Lange for the Resettlement Administration. View full size.
Those were the days when kids wore jeans that had real holes in the knees instead of designer-made ones. And people were thin because they were hungry, not because they suffered from anorexia. This scene is straight out of "The Grapes of Wrath" -- a book only a few students have much patience for ("It's too long!") Imagine if they had to experience some of the realities of those times.
