Washington, D.C., circa 1930. "Lacrosse, Central Stadium." Teams unknown; perhaps someone out there can fill us in. Contest to be decided: Most Outstanding Uniform. National Photo Company Collection glass negative. View full size.
The Brits' losing streak was as short as the slacks their Annapolis adversaries. After this opening loss, the Oxford-Cambridge team won every remaining game against the American teams, scoring 114 goals while giving up only 36. The rout was softened by the fact that many of members of the visiting team were Rhodes Scholars from the U.S. or Canada.
I would be absolutely willing to kill someone to get one of those jackets.
Oxford-Cambridge had the snappy jackets:
St. John's appears in the caption of similar looking photos from what appears to be the same venue, although with a different opponent, in the same collection. There are conflicting reports on the game itself, if indeed it's from 1930. The schedule doesn't show them playing St. John's. Although an article published a few weeks later has St. John's as O-C's only loss.
of several of the chaps in the stripes, I'd say they're definitely the Brits.
The Post reports on a few possible lacrosse matches at Central Stadium. In 1926, Maryland University met Oxford-Cambridge. 1928 saw an Olympic elimination contest between Army, Navy, St. John's and Maryland. In 1930, the Brits from Oxford-Cambridge visited again, this time meeting St. John's of Annapolis. Given the great stylistic differences in uniforms, I would reckon this to be one of the matches between the British and Americans. The 1930 match occurred on April 1, with St John's winning 7-2.
This is the famous Central (now Cardozo) High School, designed by William Ittner. The building is enormous.
I'd have guessed those high-cut white shorts were more 1970s. I guess it just goes to show that fashions recycle themselves.
This was the old Central High School on Clifton Street, which has been Cardozo High School since 1949.
On the right we have members of the DuPont Circle Artistic and Sensitives, and on the left, the Manly Murderers
I think it's the Washington Seersuckers vs. the New Jersey Legshavers.
