Shelter Island, New York, circa 1904. "A race. Manhanset House." 8x10 inch dry plate glass negative, Detroit Publishing Company. View full size.
Why, no, I don't hear any ominous cello music and, besides, there are no Great White sharks anywhere near here, you little silly!
Manhanset House, known throughout the Eastern seaboard as an elegant resort, opened in 1873. The cottages built around this resort took on an entirely different flavor from those across Dering Harbor. The guests were wealthy yachtsmen who could safely moor their magnificent yachts in the secluded harbor. The New York Yacht Club had a station in the harbor, and the Shelter Island Yacht Club was founded in 1886. The first hotel burned in 1896 and was replaced by another, which also burned, in 1910, never to be rebuilt.
The young lady at right, with long hair and white bow, could be straight out of the movie. I'll bet she was very pretty, too.
Shelter Island was a very elegant resort for the wealthy. That oriental carpet might have come out of one of the summer hotels on the island.
I love the polka dot trim on one girl's bathing dress. And the rug running the length of the dock looks like it was once at home in an indoor hallway!
I have never seen a Persian rug on a pier before, gotta wonder what Antiques Roadshow would think. Somehow, looking at the guy in the knitted swimsuit (on the right, leaning on the post), I'm grateful that skimpy Speedo trunks had not been invented yet
