"A fancy dress ball." Sailors aboard the ill-fated U.S.S. Maine in 1896, two years before an explosion in Havana Harbor sank the battleship, killing most of the crew and precipitating the Spanish-American War. 8x10 inch dry plate glass negative by Edward H. Hart, Detroit Publishing Company. View full size.
The cello isn't the first instrument that comes to mind when you think "battleship."
Any idea where this pictures was taken? Other than aboard the Maine, I mean.
[These 1890s battleship photos by Edward Hart were taken at New York Harbor and Newport News, Virginia. - Dave]
I'll furnish the war. Here's a photo Hearst probably didn't run in the newspaper!
It must have taken lots of courage to dress up as a pretty girl on a ship full of very lonely men, but that beauty smack dab in the middle of the photo (with the pipecurls, hairbow and enormous Adam's apple) obviously has already been claimed by the villain with the silk top hat. Wonder if he has a sister?
