"Harvard 2nd Varsity Eight, 1915. Whitemarsch -- Brown -- Potter -- Talcott -- H. Middendorf -- Richardson -- Capt. Meter -- Busk -- coxswain Cameron." 5x7 glass negative, George Grantham Bain Collection. View full size.
I have to say that even when I was on the fourth boat in high school (and it didn't get any lower than that, because we didn't have any other boats that still floated) we managed to get everyone in the same shirt and shorts for the formal picture.
Why does the coxswain of a Harvard crew have an M on his sweater? Apparently the crew uniforms weren't. Were H's (and jockstraps) scarce in 1915?
Benjamin Spock (yeah, Dr. Spock) won an Olympic gold medal in the Men's Eight: Paris, 1924.
Does that guy on the right have a few extra turnbuckles stored in his shorts?
