One of my great-great-grandfathers, named Michael Maloney. He emigrated from Ireland to Minnesota, where he was drafted into the Union Army in 1864. His regiment served mainly in Georgia. He survived the war and died at age 54 in 1884. I don't know precisely where this photo was taken. View full size.
He really has some intense eyes! Looks like he was very serious about this photo (I know people had to hold poses for a long time in that day) but I would imagine after being in war, he had seen some hard things. I'm so glad you have this pic of one of your ancestors to share!
Your great great grandfather looks like he was a brave, steadfast man.
