October 14, 1926. Washington, D.C. "Pauline and Ellis Bostrom." Daughters of the Swedish ambassador. National Photo Company glass negative. View full size.
Sensible shoes were well-respected in diplomatic circles.
Actually I was going to say how distinguished and classy these ladies appear; the simple-yet-elegant dresses, gloves and hats count for at least half of that.
Hats, dresses, shoes: all amazing!
Ellis got the raw end of the deal in the dress department! Doncha think they could have found something that fit her a little better??
Twas a family name; her maternal grandmother was the Baroness Ellis Rehbinder. The name didn't keep prospective suitors away; five years after this photo appeared, Ellis was again in the news, due to her engagement and wedding to New Yorker Sixten Wollmar.
I bet that Ellis and Pauline were quite a doubles team.
"ELLIS BOSTROM ENGAGED.; Swedish Minister's Daughter to Wed S.F. Wollmar of New York." - NYT, 19 Feb 1931
Ellis also apparently married S. F. Wollmar, a big wheel in the ball-bearing industry.
Were I told that Ambassador Bostöm only had sons, I could easily take this photo as proof thereof.
The clothes do not do justice to these cuties.
