September 1925. "Hilda James." The British swimmer and Olympic medalist shipboard in New York Harbor after retiring from amateur sports to "preside over the pool in a new transatlantic liner." Bain News Service. View full size.
Hilda was my paternal grandmother, and I am currently researching for her biography. This photo is not in my current (extensive) collection. I also have her silver Olympic medal from 1920 and all the World Record medals and pennants. I believe this shot was taken on one of the Cunard cruise ships, probably Carinthia, which she worked on as games instructor and hostess between 1925 and 1930 after turning professional. Hilda left Cunard in 1930, marrying my grandfather W.H. McAllister, the Cunard chief wireless officer, and retiring from the sea to start a family. If anybody out there has more information, please do contact me.
Thanks a lot. Mac.
