St. Mary's County, Maryland, circa 1920. "Charlotte Hall football." Cadets at the military academy. Harris & Ewing Collection glass negative. View full size.
I see Sean Penn (back row, far right, next to the undertaker), Jude Law (middle row, far left) and Clancy Brown, who played Capt. Hadley in The Shawshank Redemption (back row, far left).
Charlotte Hall Military Academy was one of the oldest schools in Maryland, having been established by an act of the Maryland General Assembly and opening in 1774. The school was located on a 50-acre lot located near the historic Coole Springs of St.Mary's, which provided the water supply for the school and the village of the same name. It looks like the faculty member in this picture might be Professor J.F. Coad, who is described in the school's history as a beloved faculty member and St. Mary's County native. I had the privilege of knowing many people from this fine institution which dissolved in 1976 due to financial difficulties. Now there is a veterans home on the property although two of the historical buildings remain.
I believe some of the lads here are currently vying for a back-up running back spot with the 2010 Washington Redskins. On another note, Sylvester Stallone was a Charlotte Hall cadet circa 1961, although he graduated elsewhere.
That good looking cadet in the front row, second from the left has a luxurious head of thick, curly hair. I wonder if he was able to keep it as he aged. I starting losing mine in college. I hate him.
They all look healthy enough. I wonder why the local undertaker was included in the shot.
I like the Charlie Chaplin lookalike majordomo. I wonder if he was the coach?
