is Ivor Novello. Much more famous at the time than the other two and not by just a little bit, as a quick look at his Wikipedia entry will show. Just happened to be British. He became an even bigger name as time went on.
Washington Post, Jan 25, 1925"The Rat," A Thriller, At Poli's
Earl Carroll's London importation,"The Rat," will open at Poli's tonight, playing the entire week, with matinees Thursday and Saturday.
"The Rat," which created quite a sensation in London, has been running at Garrick theater there for the past seven months. It was written by a young actor, Ivor Novello, in collaboration with an actress, Miss Constance Collier. They assumed the pen name of David L'Estrange.
The scenes of "The Rat" are laid in Paris. Its story is concerned with the love of a young and beautiful girl for an Apache and her willingness to sacrifice her life on the guillotine to save the man she loved from paying the penalty of a crime he committed in protecting her honor.
Mr. Carroll has provided a cast of many prominent players, among them Miss Teddy Gerard, an American girl, who has realized signal success in London; Horace Braham, who will be seen in the title role; C.H Croker-King, Wallace McCutcheon, Katherine Revner, Ralph Stuart, Florence Stuart, Grace Stafford, Jeane Wardley, Dana Desboro, Frances Nanine, Lousis Poe and others.
"The Rat" is described as a melodramatic thriller.
It's good to see they're putting their ghost light to use behind his chair. We have one in our auditorium, too, but it's a much more pedestrian CFL on top of a de-globed torchiere.
Known as "the troubadour of the nude," Earl Carroll was famous for his productions featuring the most lightly clad showgirls on Broadway. Served jail time for perjury after giving false testimony about a Prohibition-era party he hosted featuring a naked chorus girl in a supposedly Champagne-filled bathtub. Died in 1948 along with girlfriend Beryl Wallace in a legendarily horrific airline crash when their United DC-6 exploded on a Pennsylvania mountainside on approach to New York, killing all 43 aboard.
Go on and sign it. With a guy like me, a doll like you could really go places, see? Trust me, Baby. I ain't never steered ya wrong, have I, Baby?
I've a pair of chairs just like those! I found them in the crawlspace when I bought my home, and were most likely taken from the Chautauqua where I live.
Oh, and that is one itchy-looking sweater!
