Circa 1900. "U.S.S. Texas, tampion of 12-inch gun made of metal from the Spanish cruiser Vizcaya, recording engagements of Texas in the Spanish War." 8x10 inch dry plate glass negative, Detroit Publishing Company. View full size.
I believe that at least a replica of this tampion, if not the original, is still used on the Texas, at anchor next to the San Jacinto Battleground, on the Turning Basin south of Houston.
I started wondering what the diameter of the 12-inch tampion really is and what was used at the lip to seal it? Tar pitch, maybe? And, let me tell you, I've been all over the world. Just now I'm stuck on the Crickhowell Bridge over the river Usk. Don't ask me how I got here or when I'll be back.
